Honda expects 70,000 annual Prologue EV sales in the U.S. from 2024
  • Honda and General Motors have jointly developed the Prologue EV.
  • The automaker intends to sell 100% zero emission vehicles by the year 2040.

The U.S. division of Honda Motor Co. has reportedly set a sales target of 70,000 units for the electric Prologue sports utility vehicle after its launch in 2024.

The automaker aims to sell at least 500,000 electric vehicles in the U.S. by 2030 to achieve its goal of selling 100% zero-emission vehicles by 2040.

The move comes after President Joe Biden signed an order setting the requirement for half of all the new passenger vehicles sold in 2030 to be emission-free.

Confirming the news, Executive Vice President of national operations at Honda Motor Co. America, Dave Gardner said that the company will initially focus on the sales of Prologues in California, and other states including Texas, and Florida.

He also stated that Honda is planning to add hybrid electric systems to more of its core U.S. models in the short term, to achieve higher sales volumes of the Prologue.

Notably, the Honda Prologue is being jointly developed with General Motors Co. and is primarily based on GM’s Ultium platform which is a battery system and modular platform.

GM and Honda have also joined hands to develop an electric Acura-brand SUV which is expected to enter the market in 2024. Honda is yet to comment on the manufacturing details, name, and volume targets set for the Acura.

Apart from the models co-developed with General Motors, the automotive giant is also planning to launch a series of electrified vehicles by 2030, developed on its new EV platform e-Architecture, which will assemble electric vehicles at its manufacturing units based in North America.
