Tesla Model Y receives highest possible IIHS safety rating in the U.S.

The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) in the United States has granted the Tesla Model Y 2021-2022 edition with a “Top Safety Pick” designation. Sources claimed that the medium-sized SUV's standard front crash-prevention system achieved exceptional scores in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian tests, especially after being converted to a camera-only system.

For the record, Tesla began switching its Model Y and Model 3 vehicles in North America to its wholly camera-based Tesla Vision technology in April 2021, with a new-generation processing system that no longer required integrating a radar.

The standard front collision-prevention system for the 2021-22 Tesla Model 3 vehicles, which were particularly made after April, has also managed to receive a higher score in both crash avoidance examinations.

For those unaware, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a for-profit organization dedicated to reducing traffic accidents, deaths, and injuries through research and crash tests in the United States.

It is worth noting here that vehicles are required to pass six crash-worthy evaluations, including moderate overlap front, the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, roof strength, original side, and head restraint tests, to be eligible for the awards.

These vehicles also need high-quality headlights as well as a front crash-prevention system that should achieve high scores in vehicle-to-pedestrian and vehicle-to-vehicle tests.

In federal NCAP crash testing, the Tesla Model Y had already received top five-star overall ratings, as well as five-star results in all subcategories of testing.

Tesla had failed to meet IIHS test findings earlier, claiming that they aren't as essential as federal government tests in determining a car's safety. Most automakers, on the other hand, regard the IIHS tests as the most difficult and consider them a source of honor when passed.
